We moved the long distance from Pelican Point to High Rock (20kms) on January 16th. Prior to the move we walked the lovely beach again and came upon the most beautiful deserted cove, no a soul there, and so clean and tranquil.
We also found some wonderful shells on our walks, BUT, I keep finding them and Wolf keeps saying they are going to weigh too much in the luggage, will have to see what the outcome is.
On our half hour walk back on the main hwy to the little settlement of Pelican Point we had two vehicles pass us, we have more than that in one minute on Singing Sands Rd. Just shows you there are not of people heading out east of the city.
Our new little bungalow at High Point is very nice, everything we need, and comfortable. Nice deck looking out to the ocean and an lovely breeze keeping us cool, although the temp is just right.
Our wifi is not good here so am having problems posting photos, will post them when we get to better wifi.
The settlement of High Rock has a few more people, but, it also has dogs, which Pelican Point did not, so with dogs you get flies, yuk. There are two restaurants at the end of the road down from us, as well as three motels that presently are full from the workers at the oil storage site.
On Monday we drove out to the western end of the island, went to the harbour area where two huge cruises ships were docked and the off to find the fantastic beaches of the westend. We drove thru some pretty scabby parts, a couple of little towns that were really run down and you would not want to stop in during the night, infact they warn you not to. Got to the western end and came upon a security gate, and found out later that this is the area of the VERY UPSCALE homes of the rich and famous, well, their beach is not as nice as the beaches east of town where we are. We were a little disappointed in the hype we got prior to going out there We drove thru a small fishing community called WEST END and here we saw the devestation from the hurricane that went over this island in 2004, everything was destroyed and they are a long time rebuilding.
We were told that the fishing industry is basically done for, the conch have been fished out as have the lobster etc. We came upon a dump site for conch shells and there were litterly thousands upon thousands of them in this dump site, no wonder the industry is gone, this is only one of many dumps on all the islands in the Bahamas.
Looking at some of the paintings on the walls we noticed that the hummingbirds painted are all green, and we found that is really the color of them here, we have some flowers on the deck and the green hummingbirds come to feed, they are beautiful.
Jan got the flu on Sunday and has been so sick all week until today Thursday, horrid cough and running nose etc., so no sooner feeling better and Wolf has now come down with it. Oh well, nice place to be sick, I guess.
We are off to Long Island on Sunday morning, hopefully fully recovered. Will try and post the photos once we get there.
