Time to catch up. One thing of note, when we were in St. Peter's PEI the lady at the tourist info office related that a 1000 lb tuna had been caught a couple days before we got there, and sure enough there was a picture of it in the local paper, pretty darn big.
Still in PEI on Oct 13th where we stopped at Georgetown and viewed an old courthouse from the 1800's constructed of very interesting stone. The design was very different and the gentleman who designed it, a Mr. Harris, also designed some more buildings in Charlottetown, hopefully the posted photo will show the beautiful stone work. We travelled out to the eastern coast to Cape Bear lighthouse built in 1881. Over the years it has had to be moved back from the shore due to erosion. This is the lighthouse that picked up the distress signal from the sinking Titanic.
Next stop Charlottetown. Walked about the downtown area which is not large but the buildings again date back to the 1800's. Had a wonderful dinner at an Irish Pub, 2 for 1 steak $9.95 and it was great. Another night at Mr. Walton's resort (Walmart lot) On our travel today Wolf managed to find a field where there were still some potatoes laying about, so off he went into the field to gather his PEI potatoes, and, they were very tasty.
Oct 14th and 15th, we were off out of PEI and into Nova Scotia where we went up coast towards Cape Breton. We travelled along the "CELIDH coast" (Kaylee), which means music and party. This area know for its music. Many of the towns have Celtic names and a rugged coastline. Drove upcoast to a small town called CHETICAMP which is know for its rug hooking, lovely to look at but boy were they expensive, needless to say there is not one in the camper. Cut across on the Cabot Trail to Sydney and found that there was a "Celtic Colors 2009 International Music Festival" happening. One venue was at the United Protestant Church and we were lucky to get tickets. What an amazing performance, two groups, one with 3 fellows from Ireland and then another with 4 fellows from Nova Scotia who had not really played together before, but, boy did they play well. Spent night in the church parking lot!!!!!
Oct 16th off to Halifax and it rained the whole trip, which took all day. Another night in WalMart and it rained and blew hard all night.
Oct 17 and the rain let up and gave us a nice day to go to Pier 21 in Halifax where Wolf landed when he immigrated in 1951. It was here that Jan also found the documentation of her dad arriving in Quebec in 1927 and got a copy of the papers, very interesting. There is a museum at Pier 21 showing the many thousands of people who landed here from the 20's to the 50's, very interesting. Off to the market that is in the Alexander Keiths brewery, had lunch in the pub there, nothing great. Next stop Peggy's Cove, what a pretty area that is, of course we love the sea at all times. Did not know that the name came from the fact that the lighthouse is at the entrance to St. Margarets Cove, hence, Peggy's Cove
Continuing on we headed to Lunenburg, N.S, which has a huge history in itself, ie: boat building, trading to the South Indies, rum running and fishing all over a number of years. Got there late in the day and spent night at the campground at the tourist information campground. The homes are well looked after and being refurbished which is nice to see. Many are from the 1760's and mid 1800's. We saw the Bluenose II moored and also the Picton Castle which we came across in the South Pacific. They have a school, Lunenburg Academy, still in operation, that was built in late 1800's, amazing looking building. Unfortunately the museum and many stores were not open due to the season and it was Sunday. Still alot of tourists about tho.
Attended a luncheon, this weekend was the "NEWFIE DAYS". Well let me say, the food was horrid, yukky, never had such a terrible luncheon, all food made by the local ladies.
Around 2pm we headed towards the Bay of Fundy and found our nieces property at Victoria Harbour and spent the night on the road infront of her property, only 3 houses built there for now. It is up on a ridge so you have a view over the Bay of Fundy.
Oct 19 Monday we went to Burncoat on the bay of Fundy to see the low tide of the area known for it's very high tides(over 50ft), here we saw some interesting rock formations. Seeing these we continued to New Brunswick and Hopewell Cape where these high tides occur, the tide was out and again we saw some awesome rock formations. Spent night in the parking lot as the park is officially closed for the season, so another free night, yes!!!!!!
Oct 20th and we are finished with the Maritime Provinces. At the crossing to Maine, USA, we had logged over 10,408 kms across Canada, wow!!!!!!!!
So today Oct 21 we are now at a campground at North Truro,Cape Cod, maybe do a couple days here and get some laundry done.
We have done very well in the accomodations area, over 30 days and 11 we paid for the rest have been free, 7 Walmarts, 1 church, a couple of tourist info lots ,etc.
It is still fun and we are still getting along. When we went across the border to Maine yesterday the border official looked at us and asked if we were going to live in that small camper all the time we were away, we answered yes, and he says - well you can't be married!!!!
I will try and get some pictures posted. Regards to all
